Swelle's 5th Anniversary Giveaway: Win a £100 Voucher from Smartbuyglasses!

Congratulatons to Annushka! She has won the £100 voucher and has been notified. Thank you to everyone who entered.

It's hard to believe that The Swelle Life is now five years old! Actually, it does feel every bit that long, in a good way. We've explored so many beautiful and inspiring subjects through words and images - 1400 posts in total! (And still no carpal tunnel syndrome, but I am on my second prescription for reading glasses.) My enthusiasm has never waned thanks to all of these wonderful things out there in the world that keep the momentum going and the curiosity insatiable. I'm looking forward to another five years of sharing it all with you.

Smartbuysunglasses

To celebrate, and as a thank you for reading, SmartBuyGlasses UK is giving away a £100 voucher for a free pair of designer sunglasses or glasses to a reader of The Swelle Life.  This giveaway is based on a point system using Rafflecopter, so the more tasks you complete, the greater chance you have of winning.

Here are the tasks:

  • 1 point - Like SmartBuyGlasses UK on FB
  • 1 point - Visit SmartBuyGlasses, choose your favourite pair of designer eyewear and share it on your FB
  • 1 point - Follow SmartBuyGlasses on Pinterest
  • 1 point - Pin your favourite pair of designer eyewear from SBG on your Pinterest
a Rafflecopter giveaway

With 160 designer brands to browse you're sure to find a covetable pair. If it's eyeglasses you're looking for, some of my favourites are styles from Miu Miu and Prada, and for sunglasses it has to be Tom Ford or Marc by Marc Jacobs - I've got my eye on several pairs of cat eyes. And of course there's the ever-popular Ray Bans, including the Clubmaster style in 11 colours. Having trouble deciding? Use their 3D Try On Service that allows you to take a photo and see how the glasses look on your face!

These are my favourites from the Tom Ford selection:

TomFord_smartbuyglasses

This giveaway is open to readers worldwide. It will close at midnight GMT on 20th April, 2013. The winner will be announced the next day on The Swelle Life, and a representative from SmartBuyGlasses UK will contact the winner with details for redeeming the prize. Good luck!

Finally, I wanted to mention something special that the site is involved in: SmartBuyGlasses has a Buy One, Give One charity where they give away a free pair of eyeglasses to someone in need, for every pair of eyeglasses purchased. They have donated over $1 million USD worth of eyeglasses to impoverished people in Africa and Asia. You can read more about it here

Win a Duro Olowu Limited Edition Umbrella

Duro_umbrellasThese vibrant umbrellas will lift your spirits on the gloomiest of days

A sparking highlight of the preview day I spent at Frieze London was the Duro Olowu umbrella installation – specially commissioned to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Outset Frieze Art Fair Fund to benefit the Tate Collection (OFT). The Fund is organised and funded by Outset Contemporary Art Fund with support from Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts.

Two exclusive umbrella designs featuring Olowu’s signature fabrics were launched at Frieze London in October and are on sale at limited outlets, including the shops at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. One of the most sought-after designers working internationally, Duro’s designs, inspired by his Jamaican-Nigerian heritage and London upbringing, are a favourite of Michelle Obama, Uma Thurman and other trend-setters.

There are only a limited number of Olowu’s colour design umbrellas in existence (retailing at £85), and thanks to Le Méridien Piccadilly I have one to give away! If you’d like to be in with a chance of winning one of these gorgeous limited edition umbrellas, please answer the following question in the comments by midnight (GMT) on Wednesday, November 22:

Which anniversary is OFT celebrating this year?

a) 2nd

b) 5th

c) 10th

A winner will be chosen randomly from all of the correct answers and announced on November 23. Please note: Due to the size of the umbrella this giveaway is only open to those with addresses in the UK. Good luck!

And the size is a perfect 165 x 115 mm.

The Winner of the Foto Crush Card is...

FotoCrush_Lauren

First, HUGE apologies for the delay in announcing the winner publicly. I haven't been able to blog since last Monday thanks to my hard drive crashing and I didn't anticipate getting back to it would take this long. Oh what power this machine wields over one's life, it's terrifying.

Congratulations to Lauren! She won the Foto Crush giveaway and now gets to create her own photo card artwork. We hope she'll share her brilliant creation so we can see, too!

Thanks to everyone who entered and to Foto Crush for offering such a cool prize!

Swelle Giveaway! Create Your Own Photo Card Art with Foto Crush

   Fullscreen capture 28092011 144928

Foto Crush transformed my photo with 'Go Ask Alice'

I love this giveaway! The winner gets to create their own photo card art with the help of Foto Crush, a new online service with an inspired team who help people connect with their own amazing creativity through photo storytelling. Their photo cards were recently featured in VIP gift bags for NY Fashion Week and the Emmys.

From their online shop you can browse themed categories (including fashion, of course!) with a growing selection of  awesome designs, then choose your favourite to apply to your own photo. Order your artwork as a printed single card or set on boutique quality card stock, or a high resolution jpg/PDF that you can print, unlimited at home.

Foto Crush created a great card for me, I gave them one of my favourite images that I shot and their artwok really transformed the original. The result varies depending which design you choose. I went with "Hearts Afire" and they also applied '"Go Ask Alice" (in the header photo), which made me think twice!

300
Foto Crush's new 'Bean' Photo Bling

What You Get

The winner receives a high resolution jpg/pdf file set of their art by email. If they reside in the US they have the option of choosing a printed set of 15 cards (a $52.35 value) on boutique quality card stock which will be delivered to their US address. (Just to clarify, it's one or the other in that case!)

How it Works

You email your photo to Foto Crush and they will customise it with your choice of artwork and/or their new Photo Bling. You can add text, too. They will email you the proof within 72 hours at which point you can request minimal changes. Then you receive by email the final high resolution card files in jpg & PDF formats and marvel at your awesome new artwork!

It's a Swelle Giveaway! DKNY Be Delicious

  2010-10-14

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of their scent Be Delicious, DKNY has generously offered two bottles to Swelle readers! I've tried it as I was given a bottle for myself and found it to be a warm, fruity fragrance that isn't overly sweet. It's a nice every day scent and I like the apple-shaped bottle.

The two winners will each receive one bottle of DKNY Be Delicious Eau de Toilette spray, 30ml.

To win, you need to do two things. First, lets indulge in the olfactory theme and tell me in the comments section of this post what aroma appeals to you most. For example, freshly baked bread or roses.

Also 'like' DKNY Fragrances page on Facebook

And for an extra entry EACH you can 'like' The Swelle Life on Facebook and follow on Twitter

Be sure to tell me in the comments that you have done the extra entry requirements or I won't know!

The competition will close in one week on Thursday, October 21st at midnight, London time. Anyone, anywhere can enter. The winner will be chosen at random using random.org. The winners will be announced on Friday, October 22nd.

Good luck!

And the Winner of the Swelle Giveaway is...

6a00e54ef1680988330133f42de7e1970b-500wi

Congratulations to Jojo! Her plea for new shoes won her the £60 voucher for Sarenza.co.uk. It was a pretty gross and graphic appeal and one I identify with a little too much for my liking! Jojo ruined a new pair of shoes on the morning the competition was posted thanks to "leather shoesweat and various foot fluids" from burst blisters on the way to work. I, too, have kept on going despite the pain and obvious sloshing inside my shoe and wound up with wounds that have taken three weeks to heal completely. And I loved the fact that she was wearing pink, bow-adorned shoes with ankle socks and tights. To get those all bloody is just tragic.

Enjoy your new shoes, Jojo, and be sure to break them in first!

Thanks to Sarenza.co.uk for generously providing the voucher, and also to everyone who entered - it was a very tough choice, there were some fantastic entries!

It's a Swelle Giveaway! Win New Shoes from Sarenza (UK)

Screen Captures18

A few months back I had the chance to choose and style a pair of Sarenza shoes for their Continental Fashion Finding competition. I happily took a pair of grey suede, tall flat boots from Valensia and they've been a brilliant addition to my shoe wardrobe, which must be equal parts comfortable, stylish and versatile. In other words, they need to go with at least half of what I own, look good, and not leave me hobbling and wimpering in the street. I've been there, it's not attractive and friends aren't keen to carry you on their backs. (Strange guys will offer, however.)

Now it's your chance to get your own free shoes, or at least win something toward your favourite pair (because if you're anything like me you'll be most attracted to the expensive ones). Sarenza has generously offered one Swelle reader £60 in vouchers to go shoe shopping at sarenza.co.uk

To enter, tell us in the comments section of this post why you deserve to win a new pair of shoes. You may be fabulous but that's not a good enough reason! The lovelies at Sarenza will choose their five favourite answers from all submitted and from those, I'll choose the winner.

Please note: This competition is open only to UK residents.

This competition will run for one week, closing at midnight, 20th September. The top five answers as chosen by Sarenza will be submitted to me and the winner will be announced before the end of the week.

Good luck, and remember to charm us with your answer!

The prize is a one-time use $80 gift certificate to be spent on any of CSN Stores 200+ websites - in other words, the winner gets a shopping spree! The selection above is some of my picks of items you can buy with the $80, such as a Flirty apron or Jasper Conran dinner plates; or apply it toward something bigger like the duck egg blue Eames-style chair - nice!

Swelle Giveaway! Notebooks I Met and Liked

IMG_0007

A little while ago I received a great little notebook from Archie Grand. It's fuchsia pink, hard backed and just small enough to fit into any handbag. It came with the cover inscription 'SHOPAHOLICS I MET AND LIKED'. (How did they know??) All of their notebooks fit the '...I had and liked' or '...I met and liked' theme and the favourable subjects range from Communists to Husbands to Models.

My Shopaholic notebook came with me to London fashion week - I keep my important fashion notes in it and it's compact enough to not weigh you down yet large enough to actually be useful. And the paper is high quality stock - it's weighty with a lovely texture and a low emission signature. The books are tread sewn with a matte leathery lamination and each has 120 blank white pages. The size is a perfect 160x115 mm.

I wrote the wonderful people at Archie Grand to thank them and asked if they would be so kind to offer an extra notebook for a Swelle giveaway, and they very generously sent nine titles! So I'll have a draw for two a week - one Tuesday and one Friday. The titles are quite varied and there are seven different colours, so I'll give each winner a choice of what is left.

To enter, please do the following:

(If you're not on Twitter and have no desire to be just send me an email to tell me - top left sidebar.)

Let me know in the comments section of this post that you're a fan and follower (how sycophantic does that sound??) and tell me which title from the Archie Grand site is your favourite.

The books are sealed in protective plastic and may be hard to read in the photo, so here are the titles (with corresponding colours) available for the first giveaway:

JOURNALISTS I MET AND LIKED

PHOTOGRAPHERS I MET AND LIKED

SHOPAHOLICS I MET AND LIKED

LOVERS I HAD AND LIKED

FASHIONISTAS I MET AND LIKED

CHEFS I MET AND LIKED (white cover)

DESIGNERS I MET AND LIKED

SECRET AGENTS I MET AND LIKED

BOSSES I HAD AND LIKED

The giveaway for the Friday draws will close at 12 pm London time on the day and will be announced that afternoon. The giveaway for the Tuesday draws will close at 12 pm London time on the day and will be announced that afternoon. The first giveaway is this Friday, February 26th. (The announcement for the first giveaway will have to made in the evening as I will be in Edinburgh that day!) Anyone, anywhere can enter. Good luck!

A Swelle Reader Wearing a Smile and Her Prize

Swelle1

At last! A reader who won a Swelle giveaway has shared a photo of her wearing her prize! This is Argie and she won the PONO sculpted and lacquered wood Refined Warrior Necklace a while back and it looks fantastic on her.

Doesn't she have the greatest smile? I'd be beaming, too, if I was a hugely talented young artist, costume and fashion designer. We're going to be seeing a lot more of Argie in the spring in a new Designer Series feature that explores the body of work she's been creating this past year. I guarantee big Oohs and Ahhs!

The Winners of the Fauchon Goodies Are...

IMG_4022

Being out of commission this past week nearly put the kabosh on my giveaway - the Fauchon goodies were almost all sold out when I finally made it in on Saturday! Luckily, there were some great ones left and tragedy was averted.

And what did I come home with for you lovely fans of The Swelle Life? First we have the pretty Fauchon heart box of 15 milk and dark chocolate hearts - the milk are filled with hazelnut praline and the dark have Gianduja (hazelnut chocolate) with splits of thin pancakes (do I have to give these away??).

Second is an adorable gold box of biscuits with an Eiffel Tower, ribbons and stars motif. Inside are three kinds of petit beurre: with pieces of Isigny toffee; crispy with pieces of nougatine and dark chocolate; and with Réunion cane sugar. Seriously, you wouldn't mind if I opened the plastic and had one, right? (You are so lucky it's wrapped in plastic!)

Third is a little heart-shaped box of my favourite truffles: Charbonnel et Walker Pink Marc de Champagne Truffles - little pink spheres of heaven!

And here are the lucky winners:

Vanessa Pepin: The heart-shaped Fauchon chocolates!

Kelsi Smith: The Fauchon biscuits!

Karen Laporte: The Charbonnel et Walker champagne truffles!

Congratulations! And a big thank you for reading The Swelle Life! Please leave a comment here with your email or send me a message at denise[at]swellebydenise.com with your address so I can send your treats to you! ♥

One More Swelle Giveaway! An Adorable Print Skirt from Chloe and Boo

The Swelle Life

Well, I thought we'd seen our last giveaway for the year, but then came along Chloe and Boo who generously offered to make an A-line skirt for one lucky Swelle reader, in the cute Little Green Bird printed cotton you see above! The main photo is The Little Lady So Polite skirt available in her Etsy shop which shows the style of the custom skirt.

Chloe and Boo is all about adorable skirts in fun and fresh prints with pretty embellishments - fabric rosettes, buttons and beads are signature features - and flirty hairbands and clips. She also paints and applies her technique to her skirts as well as canvas for a painterly, one-of-a-kind piece.

The name Chloe and Boo is an homage to the designer's two cats she rescued from a shelter, and who are modelling some accessories below!

So here's what you have to do to win. Tell us in the comments section of this post how you would style this A-line skirt in the Little Green Bird print. Adding how your pet would wear it is optional! :)

The giveaway will close Tuesday, December 22nd at midnight (London time) and the winner will be announced on Wednesday the 23rd. Anyone, anywhere can enter.

For bonus entries (the last winner, Carly, won on her bonus entry!) you can do any of the following for one bonus each:

I said I wasn't going to make any more announcements but this is when I would usually mention what giveaway is coming up next, so here's one more heads up: All Facebook fans of The Swelle Life are automatically entered in a special holiday draw I'm doing (Fauchon chocolates!) as an appreciation for all of your wonderful support this year! You can read the details here, and there's still time to join the fun on Facebook!

Presents! A Holiday Giveaway Exclusively for Fans of The Swelle Life!

Fullscreen capture 02122009 104755-1

The word fan makes me a little uncomfortable; l prefer 'minion' or 'groupie'. No! Seriously, we all share a common love of beautiful things whether they take the form of an haute couture dress, a compelling painting, an art deco brooch, a field of wild flowers, or a photo of the moonlit water of the Seine. Well, I assume we do if you're a fan of The Swelle Life!

So, in the spirit of holiday giving and to show my appreciation for your support of my labour of love, I'm doing a giveaway exclusively for fans of The Swelle Life (as Facebook has facilitated such a thing), and what better way than to share another of my passions - French chocolates! One of my favourite Paris foodie paradises is Fauchon, and I was squealing with joy when I discovered I can buy some of their heavenly confections locally, here in the north east of England! (I did squeal just a little and I muffled it, but the raised, clenched fists pulsating at my sides aroused some attention along with the high pitched vocal leakage.)

What I've decided to do is pick out three gorgeously packaged, decadent treats for a first, second and third prize. The first will be the magenta heart shaped box of To Die For praline-filled chocolates as you see above (I promise you, you will make weird noises as you eat them), and I haven't decided on the second and third yet but one may be their spiced ground Christmas coffee - any votes for that?  I'm going to buy them this week and then I'll let you know what delectables await.

If you aren't yet a fan of The Swelle Life on Facebook you have time to become one, but this is the only announcement I'll be giving before making the draw of all the names listed in the Fans list on Monday, December 14. So, if you're already a fan you don't have to do anything at all, just keep reading! I'll announce the winners on the day of the draw. Bonne chance!

It's a Swelle Giveaway! Win a Gorgeous Noémiah Feather and Chain Necklace

Noemie

This is such a lovely giveaway, well - lovely and cool! That's what I think of the unique feather-centric jewellery from Montreal's Noémiah. Noémie Vaillancourt, the designer of the label, has always used feathers in her designs and her muse material is the starting point of each piece. Their textures, colours and lengths provide the inspiration which she uses to explore asymmetry and ultimately create a modern and stylish piece. Noémie reinvents herself with each new twice-yearly collection and says "The most beautiful comment about my work is when someone recognizes a Noémiah design!"

I think she must hear that observation often; there's a delicate beauty about her pieces and it's apparent she's discerning in her feather selection and considers the flow of the jewellery. There's something very fluid about them. The necklaces and earrings are just so lovely and their coolness comes from how fantastic they look with a simple and easy outfit.

You have a chance to win a Noémiah 'Dancer in the Rain' feather and chain necklace featuring high quality, natural black and white feathers; a gold-plated chain and a small gold-plated filigree which sells for $50.

To enter, take a look at the Noemiah collection on Etsy and tell us in the comments section of this post which is your favourite piece. This giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere and ends Sunday, December 6th at midnight, London Time. The winner will be chosen randomly using Random.org and announced on Monday, December 7th.

For an extra entry each:

And be sure to mention it in your entry so you get your bonuses! Good luck!

A Gossipy Swelle Giveaway: Win a Custom Embroidered T-shirt from Miss Jacqueline White!

Coll_alpha_lrg

I am so excited about this giveaway, it couldn't be more fun. Or more racy. It's based on a scenario that it is all too familiar for so many of us girls: You meet a guy, sparks fly and one thing leads to another. A magical encounter ensues and the world is all rainbows, sunshine and bluebirds singing sweet songs. Until the next words out of Mr. Wonderful's mouth are "Did you used to be a bit of a slag?"

The horror! Ring any bells? For Miss Jacqueline White, a London-based fashion and costume designer and stylist who can create just about anything, it was these very pitfalls of dating that provided her lightbulb moment. After enduring the unthinkable and listening to her friends' own shocking tales of pillow talk faux pas she began collecting these 'post-coital clangers' (love that) and embroidering them on T-shirts along with the date and location of the love crime, which became her debut collection. This saucy siren will not suffer in silence.

Other wicked utterings include "Spare me the lifestory"; "Just don't fall in love with me"; "I run with a pretty sexy crowd" (that one is highly laughable) and gasp "As a woman you have nothing to offer the world." Oh no he didn't. Oh yes, he did.

Fullscreen capture 27102009 235056-1 In summer I received an invite to 'Naughty Launderette', the launch of the collection which was held in - you guessed it - a launderette, perfectly befitting the theme of airing one's dirty laundry. But unfortunately I couldn't attend as I was in Canada. However I couldn't let it end there when I saw what it was all about. I thought the concept behind the collection was an absolute riot and the T-shirts beautifully crafted; I knew I had to feature this precocious and intriguing designer. We discussed a contest and then Miss Jacqueline White generously offered to embroider the winning clanger on one of her original appliquéd woman-in-the-throes-of-passion T-shirts. Brilliant!

So, if you're willing to share/confess/blubber the cocky communiqué that put the passion in the crapper, you could win your very own bespoke Miss Jacqueline White piece!

Now, certainly this behaviour is not limited to girl/guy relationships as nastiness in intimate situations knows no bounds, so this contest is open to anyone who has done the shame walk home shaking their and asking the world in general "Did he/she really say that to me??"

To enter, give us the dirt in the comments section of this post - and feel free to use an alias if you feel you need to! Anyone, anywhere, can enter. The contest will run until midnight of Sunday, November 8, London time. The super lucky winner will be drawn at random, and announced on Monday.

For an extra entry for each, you can:

So, do all four - be sure to tell me! - and you get four extra entries! And be sure to check out Miss Jacqueline White's website to shop and see photos from the Naughty Launderette and her creative styling.

Read on to learn more about the fabulous Miss Jacqueline White - she gives great interview:

While your debut collection is far more than just another range of T-shirts, did it feel more restrained than the other side of your work, as in the over-the-top styling and costume for bands?

It certainly did feel different. I had collected a lot of material/stories, many of which had to be discarded because I thought the language was too strong, or they were simply too sad or nasty. The practicalities of designing and producing a viable collection I found challenging, rather than restraining. I had to think about a range of body shapes, rather than just one client, that is why each of the women's is a different cut. I also had to consider durability, washing, and of course the dreaded budgeting - for example: Are individually laser cut perspex size labels justified? YES.

MJW You're very talented with print, embroidery and appliqué, three techniques that make our hearts beat faster. Will you be applying your skills to your next collection?

Yes. There will also be embroidery on the men's, without appliqué, and with less colour. Lots of men have requested I make versions of the women's for them. The material for the next collection is proving very difficult to gather. I can't really say anymore without spoiling the surprise...

Ooh, the anticipation! So, it seems you're a heroine of sorts for exposing such naughty behaviour and turning it back on these callous culprits. How does it feel to be the liberator of the heinous memories these East London girls have been carrying around for years?

I love it, actually. I am something of a naughty heroine amongst the girls, and the boys just seem to think I'm even naughtier than they did before. I don't think I have been to a dinner party in the last year without the whole thing pouring out, followed by lots of drunken reminiscing or confessions. It feels good to 'out' these men, because really we are having the last laugh.

Good work! Has there been any backlash from the outed 'acquaintances?'

Hmm...Some of them know, some don't. The ones who do know actually love it, and see it as an affirmation of their bachelorness. One past fling seemed genuinely disappointed when he did not make the final cut.

I thought the collection might affect my love life in a negative way but instead the opposite happened. A recent lover made me laugh so much when his first post-coital comment was 'What do I have to say to get on a T-shirt?"

Fullscreen capture 28102009 001111 Ha! Well, that's one way for a girl to gain the upper hand! What's next for Miss Jacqueline White?

Apart from boshing out loads of Ts for Christmas...I have a couple of massive commercials, just finished one for an airline, about to start a crazy one involving animatronics in the costumes, which is a first for me so it will be pretty interesting. I move into my new studio in three weeks which I cannot wait for. It is a very unusual space, a glass box inside an old office block at London Fields. But my mind and time are completely preoccupied with Miss Tahita Bulmer at the moment, in the build up to the launch of the second album from New Young Pony Club. We are shooting the cover in three weeks, and the album launches in January 2010. I am very excited about the new looks we have created, and quietly confident that we will wipe the floor without joining in the freakshow which seems to be going on in female pop star styling at the moment. It's not sexy, is it?

swelle.

Sexy? I'd have to agree and say not. I cannot wait to see what she's got in the works.

Swelle Giveaway! Win a Supayana Reworked 'Parisienne' Top!

_MG_1245-2

How adorable is this plaid, ruffle sleeve, bow-tie top? It's from Supayana and you could win your very own 'Parisienne' top that's made just for you! Supayana is a Montreal-based clothing line run by designer Yana Gorbulsky. Her one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces have been featured in the New York Daily News, Bust magazine, Daily Candy, Montreal Metro and she was the 2007 winner of Fred Flare's Next Big Thing contest. Supayana has been recycling fabric and clothing for many years and is committed to being eco-friendly in her professional and personal life. She strives to convince others that eco-fashion doesn't have to be frumpy and boring!

Well, one look at her Etsy shop has me convinced that her clothes are nothing but sweetly feminine, original and very smart. To enter the contest to win the Parisienne shirt made in your size - which sells for $59 - please do the following:

  1. Follow Supayana on twitter
  2. Become a fan of The Swelle Life on Facebook
  3. In the comments section of this post tell us how you would style your own Parisienne shirt!
  4. For an extra entry re-tweet this contest announcement on twitter!
The Parisienne top is made from a recycled men's plaid shirt and black cotton voile. As the shirt is custom made for the winner the plaid will be different as it will be made from another shirt than the one pictured. The winner will be able to choose their size from XS to XL - bust sizes will be given. If it's a male reader who wins the top we can offer help with figuring out the best size for a gift!

Anyone from anywhere can enter. The winner will be chosen at random. The contest runs until next Sunday, Sept. 27th and the winner be announced on Monday, Sept. 28th. Good luck!

*Before you enter read on to find out what makes Supayana designs so special:

Supa1 What is that made you choose to rework clothing rather than create your designs with new fabrics when you started your line in Brooklyn, New York?

I think in the beginning it was out of necessity. I was a university student when I first started Supayana and second-hand materials were much more affordable than new fabric. Using recycling materials allows me to use high quality fabrics and still keep a low price point. Most of my clothes are $60 and under so it's quite affordable for something that's handmade, recycled, and made in Montreal. While using second-hand materials is cheaper, it is a lot more time consuming than showing up at a fabric store and buying a few bolts of fabric. I have to make many trips to scour thrift stores and recycling warehouses to find the materials I need. So, even though I save money on the material itself, I actually spend a lot of time sourcing it.

Do you think that the current popularity of recycled clothing is a fleeting trend or a preference that will endure; and do you think it could grow to one day compete with ready to wear?

I'm not sure that it's a trend because a lot of people were doing it before it was fashionable to be green. I think it's become more acceptable to wear something that's 'used', so maybe that's why it's more popular now. I also think peoples' awareness about the environment has grown significantly over the past few years, so a lot of people think about how they want to spend their money. Maybe one day it will compete with ready to wear...I still think we're a long way from that. I'm going to the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris in a few weeks, so I'd like to see what kinds of things will show up on the runway.

You're committed to eco-friendly practices in all aspects of your work and life; what kinds of measures can you suggest to readers for becoming more environmentally responsible?

I think if everyone made a few small changes in their lifestyle it could go a long way to making a difference. Here are three small things you can do to start:

  1. Stop buying bottled water. You can buy a cute stainless steel bottle and use that over and over.
  2. Try not to buy anything with excessive packaging.
  3. Try to minimize your waste as much as possible. Whatever you throw away in your garbage bin doesn't just magically disappear when the garbage truck takes it away...it ends up in a landfill or in the sea!

Thanks for the tips, Yana!

The Winner of the Swelle Giveaway is...

Fullscreen capture 29012009 214847

First, I'd like to say that after reading the responses to 'Tell us what you're doing to help a social or environmental cause or what you plan to do!' I wished I had the ability to award sainthoods. PONO, the company who donated the gorgeous necklace is active in social causes and adheres to strict, self-imposed environmental standards so I thought it appropriate that the contest entries reflect the same. So many of you are doing such amazing and thoughtful things with your time and reading about it made me want to reach through the screen and hug you. And more importantly, follow your lead.

This morning I put all the names in a hat and had my daughter pull one out and it was Argie! (I prefer the manual method to the online pickers - more tactile). Here was Argie's submission:

This post is awesome! As a student there isn't always time to dedicate to others, but I definitely do what I can at every chance. I start classes on Monday, but this weekend I am working on a mural project with the Girl Scouts of America. I wasn't a Girl Scout as a kid but to see the skills and values the girls develop is inspiring. And of course I always try to be as green as possible. My costume design research is presented in Power Point, Facebook event invites are a BIG thing for me, and I've always got reusable vinyl bags with me at the grocery store, library, or other shops. Fabric left over from projects goes into collage in my paintings or swatches for future costume designs, etc. A big thing for me also is Breast Cancer--I lost my aunt three years ago after it spread throughout her body. I click everyday at thebreastcancersite.com, volunteer at Susan G. Komen events, and try to educate others. If there's anything else I can do in my everyday life, someone let me know!

I happened to meet Argie while we were both in Paris in July and found out that she's a very talented, young artist, costume designer and student, among many other things. She's a very busy girl so the fact that she is offering her time to causes is truly an inspiration to the rest of us.

Thank you to all who entered, and a special thanks to PONO for donating this very generous prize. Argie's a lucky girl!

Watch for the next Swelle Giveaway coming up in September. Hint: it's a book!

Swelle Giveaway! Win a PONO Warrior Refined Necklace

Pono_1

PONO is the Hawaiian word meaning 'righteousness.' And the Warrior Refined Necklace in 'Beach', above, embodies all kinds of goodness: it is made of sculpted, lacquered wood; is manufactured in Italy under strict environmental regulations; and it's from PONO by Joan Goodman, an NY-based, environmentally and socially conscious accessories company that has initiated the Give Love, Practice Peace Campaign. Three collections have been created with the purpose of donating a portion of the profits to designated charities: Save the Planet supports The Climate Project; Brightness of Life assists Give a Girl a Chance; and Arctic Awareness is for the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC).

And you can win this gorgeous statement necklace that retails for $550! For a chance to make it yours, you need to do the following:

  1. Become a Fan of PONO on Facebook
  2. Become a Fan of The Swelle Life (New!)
  3. In the comments section of this post, tell us what you're doing to help a social cause or what you plan to do!
  4. Re-tweeting this post on Twitter will get you a second entry!
And be sure to see below for the interview with Joan Goodman!

The winner will be chosen at random next Sunday, August 30th at midnight, London time. Anyone can enter. The announcement will be made on Monday. Pomaikai! (Good luck!)

Here's my awesome friend Tammy of You Say Potato, a fantastic cooking blog, doing a stellar job modeling the Warrior Refined necklace. Especially considering it was completely spontaneous! I put it around her neck on Yonge St. in Toronto and snapped the photo, luckily she was up for it!

Tammy_pono

Joan Goodman, a button-maker for 20 years, has a genuine appreciation and love for nature, having lived in Hawaii in the 70s. These qualities are reflected in her jewelry designs as well as her business model. Her necklaces, bracelets, bangles and earrings are made of high quality wood, resins and unusual materials such as cow horn and are typically bursting with colour. And they've been featured in many fashionable films and TV shows including The Devil Wears Prada and Gossip Girl.

Here, Joan gives us a glimpse into her life with PONO:

How did you make the transition from making buttons to creating jewelry?

I'm very lucky in that I work with two amazing Italian button factories. It was somewhat of a natural progression to push the envelope and try something new.

Can you tell us how your time living in Hawaii has shaped what PONO has become today?

The inspiration of PONO is in the beauty and colour of Hawaii. The ocean, the flowers, the trees, the mountains, the birds...some part of all these elements is infused in every piece.

Fashion04 I like that you don't rely on trends to provide direction for your creations. What do you think it is about your collections that appeals, exclusive of what's happening at the moment?

The pieces can fit into many categories because they are classic with a twist. A lot of the pieces can be worn with just a white shirt...there are no boundaries. So the pieces work for lots of people, places and things.

PONO is both environmentally and socially conscious, yet you are able to offer a range of price points that includes the very affordable. How are you able to achieve this while demanding a high level of quality?

We work with our Italian factories to make it possible. We try to cover a wide-range of prices; it's not always easy to make that happen and stay true to your beliefs. But we do our best without compromising our beliefs.

What do you attribute to your success as a designer who has made it all happen for herself?

A lot of hard work and I'm very lucky I have a lot of angels.

What's next for Joan Goodman and PONO?

I wonder about that every single day! I'm going to Italy in a couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted!

swelle.

The Winner of the Fashion A-Z Giveaway is...

Fullscreen capture 29012009 215403-2

The lucky winner of Fashion A-Z: An Illustrated Dictionary is Mary Jane! Congratulations Mary Jane! And thanks to everyone who entered, your answers as to which fashion detail is your favourite were fantastic and I think there were barely two of the same in the bunch! Reading them as they came in was a real treat and it served as a reminder of why fashion is endlessly enticing.

Mary Jane tells us her favourite detail is godet inserts, "they are so flattering!" I liked her answer because I had no idea what godet inserts are (the draw was random, just to clarify!). Something new to learn! So I looked it up in Fashion A-Z and there it was:

"A piece of material, typically triangular in shape, that is inserted into a garment to add fullness. Used on skirts, dresses, gloves and sleeves."

So that's what those are! I should mention that Mary Jane is the designer behind By Mary Jane, a unique line of bohemian and vintage-inspired, one of a kind handbags, jewelry and headbands.

Watch for the next contest coming soon! It's a very cool necklace!

Swelle Giveaway! Fashion A to Z: An Illustrated Dictionary

Jacket-100

I'm all excited about this giveaway, I have this book myself and it's something that I think every fashion lover and student should have. It's especially helpful for us fashion bloggers who time and time again find ourselves plotting along just fine in a post until we want to describe a particular detail on a garment and we have no idea what it's called! It sounds so much better to say "epaulettes" instead of "those loopy things on the shoulders."

So thanks to Laurence King Publishing, I have a copy of Fashion A to Z: An Illustrated Dictionary to give to one lucky reader! It covers every detail, accessory, garment and costume you can imagine and gives a brief history of the item so it's a great way to expand your fashion brain. Writer and designer Alex Newman wrote the book and the fun illustrations that brighten each page are by renowned fashion illustrator and designer Zakee Shariff.

To enter the contest*, answer the following question in the comments section of this post:

What is your favourite fashion/style detail? (Like ruching, a boater hat, or cashmere for example. Anything that makes a garment or accessory special or is a standout piece.)

*If you re-post this giveaway on your blog and provide the link with your answer you will get an extra entry. I will also count RTs on Twitter as second entries as well. I will go in and put a '2' in your comment once I've seen it!

The contest will run until midnight (London time) Thursday, July 9 and the winner, chosen at random, will be announced on Friday. Anyone, anywhere, can enter!

Good luck!

Swelle's 500th Post! Win a Handmade Brooch!

Brooch-1

I actually passed my 500th post while I was in Paris but I wasn't sure what to offer for the giveaway  (I do one every 100 posts), so when I got back I went through my bags and boxes of fabric and trims and came up with this sweet little fabric brooch. It's made of layers of black and white chenille, ice blue lace, cream tweed, more blue lace, and finished with a silver grey velvet bow.

It's not the best photo, I took it myself, of myself, and then my batteries died (how many years have I said I'd get rechargeables??) so I don't have any detail shots but I think you get the idea.

The way the giveaway works is all comments since the last giveaway are considered entries and each one counts. I randomly choose from all of them regardless of the age of the post you left a comment for.

Since I left the prize a mystery until now I'm going to give it a few more days, so all comments received until midnight this Friday (UK time) will be included in the draw. And any received after that will be automatically entered for the next one. (Hint: the next one will be a custom brooch, your choice!)

Good luck and thanks for the comments!

Happy Valentine's! We Have a Winner!

FourHearts_JimDine
Four Hearts, Jim Dine 1969

Today is viewed as either the greatest day ever or the worst, depending. I have a friend who celebrates 'Anti-Valentine's' and watches horror movies to mark the day. So to her, I say "Happy Anti-Valentine's, enjoy the violence!"

The winner of the heart earrings is the aptly named Luckie! Congrats, Luckie!

The contest continues so any comments received from today are entered into the next one, to mark the 500th post. The prize will be announced later so watch the site for news!

Last-Minute Valentine's Giveaway!

IMG_6522-2

I've been running a comments contest since the last one (it's ongoing) but hadn't announced the prize that I was giving away to mark my 400th post. Well, it finally sunk in that Valentine's Day is almost here and so I made earrings with Swarovski crystal hearts. They hang on a double sterling silver chain with sterling lever back clasps (they're for pierced ears). They look quite girlie in the photo but aren't nearly that saccharine on - the chain toughens them up and they're not really recognisable as hearts. They hang just over an inch long and the heart is a pale pink (paler than the photo) and the heart is fairly small. They look good on. I thought twice about giving them away! But in the end, anything for my lovely readers.

Any comment made since the last giveaway is considered an entry. I'll close it Saturday, on Valentine's Day, and choose randomly from all the comments received until then. Good luck!

I'm keeping this going for the 500th post, so all comments from Saturday on will be entered into the next one. Watch this space for the prize!

The Latest Swelle Giveaway Winner is...

Christmaslights

Congratulations Kate, you've won the Celeste Stein tights! Kate mentioned she had some ideas for styling them and I can't wait to see what she comes up with.

So far readers have won a Noa Noa crocheted cap, Cette over-the-knee socks, Noa Noa knickers and now these tights. I do love the excitement of these giveaways so what I'm going to do is keep it going from this point on. I'm approaching my 400th post in a month or so depending on the number of daily posts, so any comments from here until then will be entered. And as always, every comment counts as an entry.

The prize will be something I've made which means it's likely to be a felted accessory or a sterling wire ring with some kind of embellishment. I'd love to find something for the guys as well, I just have to sort that one out (sorry for the exclusion!).

Thank you to everyone for your comments, they really liven up the blog. I hope to see the familiar names back here and I happily welcome the new readers - it wouldn't be the same without all of you! xx

This giveaway is for Celeste Stein printed tights in Heaven Flowers. Above are looks from Anna Sui's Fall 08 RTW show to demonstrate that you don't have to tone down the rest of your outfit, you can go full on with the prints and embellishments. No rules, do what you want!

CelesteStein_heavenflowers This is the print of the tights you can win. They are wicked, and they are nuts. They're busy with all kinds of flowers, cherubs, angels and daintily detailed designs all over. You will walk down the street with these on full display, people will look down at them and their eyeballs will explode.

You have to be seriously brave to wear these, they are not for the timid. There will be no fading into the background while they occupy the surface of your legs. So, if you want to win them, you must swear to wear them proudly, hold your head up high to anyone who makes a face at you like they're dealing with a massive bowel obstruction, and above all else - LOVE how you look in them! And you have to promise to send in a photo. Are you this girl?

Just comment on any post and I'll choose the winner at random next Tuesday. Each comment is entered, so let your opinions spill forth!

Oh, how cute is that. The winner of the Noa Noa knickers is Nicole! Congratulations Nicole! Usually I'd ask the winner to send a photo so we can see how they're styling the item, but I think this time I'll just say "Hope you like them!"

The next giveaway is coming up shortly and it's a good one - Celeste Stein tights! All comments from here on will be entered so get your opinions out!

The Next Swelle Giveaway...It's a Bit Cheeky

ChipmunkCheeks

Here's the third Swelle giveaway and it's a bit, uh, different. It's pants! Knickers, undies, gitch, whatever you like to call them. The important thing is that you wear them. Is it weird to give away underpants? You decide. As the 'rules' go, all you need to do is comment on a post, any post, and you're entered. The winner will be picked at random and announced next Tuesday.

So, about the prize. It's a pair of pale pink Noa Noa feather-lite knickers in a cute retro style. They've got a yellow mesh waistband and the size is XS. They stretch a bit, but not much. They are very tiny. I mean it, they are teensy. Like, an Olsen might fit them. Good luck!

The winner of the Cette Over-Knee socks is Nicole! Thanks for all your cheery posts, Nicole! Above are photos from Lacoste's Fall RTW 2008 collection, which show us that you don't need to expose yourself with over-knee socks - wear over tights and mix or contrast colours to make a statement but still keep warm! So fun. Enjoy!

Another Swelle Treat for the Brave and Verbal!

ErwinOlaf_TheIceCreamParlourFromRain_2004
Erwin Olaf. The Ice Cream Parlor from 'Rain'

If you don't already know, I'm giving away four pretty little things, one at a time, to a reader chosen at random from the recent comments posted. Our first winner was Mary, who will soon have her Noa Noa crocheted cap to add to her collection.

What's next? A pair of Cette Over Knee socks, 60 denier, one size, wide ribbed, with Lycra, in 'Cardinal'. I didn't want to take them out of the package so below is the exact sock in black. Just try to imagine it in a brick red shade (not bright, quite muted, but colourful all the same). Just leave a comment on any post in the next seven days and you're entered as many times as you comment! The winner will be announced next Monday. Good luck!

What's That I Hear? It's Swelle Giveaway Time!!!

Katherine

Yes, as promised, it's finally here! To mark my 300th post, I'm giving away four items, one at a time. To win this one, just comment on any post from now until Monday and I'll draw randomly from the lot. If you comment more than once, each will be entered into the pool. I know people are reading, but not a lot are commenting and I'd like to get a community happening here, so don't be shy! And for those still thinking they have to be profound or elaborate with their comments (you know who you are): Just get that out of of your head! This is a fashion blog! And if you'd like to include a suggestion for a future blog post I'll do my best to bring it to you.

Now for the first giveaway - free curly fries from Arby's! Kidding. It's a pale blue crocheted skull cap from Noa Noa. Keep in mind this is definitely a skull cap, not a beanie - it will sit on the back of your head. It's adorable, but a bit of a different kind of look from the slouchy things on everyone's head at the moment. With the right attitude and style you could really work it. Here it is:

Give it Away, Give it Away, Give it Away....Soon!

40s_girls_boxing To celebrate my 300th post (which I have now well surpassed), I am giving away four items which include two from Noa Noa and two pairs of legwear (one is printed tights!). I had made a video to show you everything but thanks to some technical difficulties I have abandoned that for now. (There's no better way to stay humble than seeing yourself on video.) So, I will be photographing the items instead. But as these items are rather specific, you're likely to have your preference, so you'll get your choice of what you'd like to win. Therefore, I'm rolling out the giveway one item at a time, and if you want a shot at getting your pick just leave a comment on any post that moves you to say something (it doesn't have to be profound, you know!) and I'll choose randomly (cross my heart) from all new comments in that time period, which I'll specify. And you can win more than once.

So watch for the first one in the next few days! The gloves are off!
