Bathrooms are notorious for being the most difficult room in a house to perfect, due to space limitations and the many practical considerations. (And the fact that there's a toilet in it.) By focusing on a few simple tricks you can make your bathroom look like it was decorated by a professional.
Lighting is key
Think about what kind of lighting you currently have and ask yourself whether it suits your needs - are the lights placed to give good distribution? Does the style suit your new design? Do you see shadows on your reflection in the mirror? You may also want to consider taking advantage of new technology. Lighting can be adaptable to your mood and this can be accomplished with something as simple as a dimmer for the lights, or as complex as ambient smart lighting controlled from a smartphone. Being able to adjust the lighting according to your needs and mood is a cheap and easy upgrade that can really make a difference, from a warm glow to help you relax, to a bright white light for getting yourself ready for the day.
Think about what you'll display
If you're particular about style and want the accessories and other items in your bathroom to reflect your aesthetic, you can make a real impact with your choice of toothbrush holder, wastebasket, and toilet roll holder (bamboo is my current love and what I have in my bathroom right now). Keeping a favourite product out is ok too, like a vitamin C moisturizer to show that you take your hair care seriously. Having a couple of nice-looking bottles on display reflects your personality and keeps the room from looking too sterile.
Having good hand towels reflects your attention to detail and good taste, and you can get high quality without investment prices. Nothing brings down a beautiful bathroom like dingy, thread-bare towels, but the right ones will finish it perfectly and make it feel more welcoming. The colour you choose should sit quietly amongst your decor, unless you've gone with a bright scheme.
Experiment with materials
A good designer will introduce you to innovative materials that offer exciting possibilities. Since you're doing the job yourself, do some research. The best way is to visit your local showroom and ask about the latest trends that are changing bathroom design, there's always something! You may not be swayed, but it's always good to know what's out there - be sure to see it in person - so you can avoid finding something extraordinary after you've already invested in something else. You can also experiment with components to update your existing pieces, such as trying different kinds of doors for your medicine cabinet, or try woods in different colors and finishes for the effect you like most.
Make your mirror a feature
To change things up from the usual framed bathroom mirror or a flat cut piece that sits flush on the wall, consider a box style with LED lights on the side, for added dimension and illumination, and some models have anti-fog which is great when you need to get ready in the mirror right after your shower. Other standout styles incorporate open shelving, not to have your personal products on display but to create a feature. Adding some small plants will give your bathroom life and colour, and it will instantly brighten the space.
With a little imagination you can transform your bathroom into your new favourite room!
