Israeli illustrator Amit Shimoni created his series, HIPSTORY to get us to reflect upon our leaders, our society and ourselves. Reenvisioning political icons such as Vladimir Lenin and Winston Churchill as hipsters elicits a grin and even a hearty laugh (Lincoln decorated in gold jewellery is especially comical). But it's the idea of our most influential figures plunked into the template of today's 'self-centred' Y generation, visually summed up as the style over substance Hipster, that intrigues Shimoni. (I'm trying to do right by the illustrator and give all of this a ponder, but I do admit I have a headache and thinking about hipsters kind of makes it worse.)
You can buy prints and other items bearing Shimoni's HIPSTORY images at Society6.
Vladimir Lenin. Did you know that under Lenin's leadership, the Soviet Union became the first country in the world to legalise homosexuality? (Clearly, it didn't hold until present day, but still an interesting fact.)
