LFW's Best Prints, Pt. 3 - Mary Katrantzou

The Swelle Life4

When I first saw Mary Katrantzou's trompe l'oeil, digital prints of giant jewellery on jersey dresses last year, I didn't know what to make of them. To be honest, the idea of jewellery printed on clothes was a turn-off, it reminded me of those tops from KMart for 12 year-old girls (O Mary, full of grace, please forgive me my sins.) And they just were so bold, I hadn't really seen anything like them and they were a lot to take in. I kind of forgot about them until I saw several at Colette the other day, I think it was her entire SS09 collection and then it clicked - my eye 'got it'. These dresses from the (barely out of) Central Saint Martins grad are incredible and so special and if it weren't for the 1,000 euro price tag I would have scooped one up, especially one with the chiffon panels in the skirts - my favourite is this:

Her constructivist influences are on full display with her Fall 09 prints, and her real jewellery of wood and metal still figures prominently - what incredible pieces. New favourite. Oh, and the images are of perfume bottles.

I love how these prints make the waist look super tiny...not that the models need any help with that. Wonder if it would have the same effect on me?
