Mid-Century Modern Home Eludes Me but Not the Birds
When I imagine my dreamhouse, this is it. I grew up on the Niagara escarpment and was instantly attracted to the mid-century modern ranch-style houses I saw in the south end of St. Catharines, Ontario as a child. (It's true! Somehow California made its way north.) Most of them were painted baby blue and ivory and backed onto a ravine. I saw these as 'happy' houses and loved the liberal use of glass, slate rock for the exteriors and interiors and the extreme slant to the roof featured on some models. One of these done up with a smart mid-century modern interior would make me feel that to live in it, everything would be right in the world. This explains why I've always been drawn to David Hockney's A Bigger Splash and have a framed poster on the wall so I can see it every day.
Fat chance of living out my fantasy here in England. But that doesn't mean the local birds can't live the dream. Bruno from Curbly.com must have sensed my inclinations and sent me a link to the site's Build Your Own Mid-Century Modern Birdhouse post, complete with detailed instructions and complemented by a nicely produced podcast. How brilliant!
